Our Dear Visitor,
Welcome once again to our site. This month we look at GSOP’s “flag-component”; the project’s second Component– Labour Intensive Public Works (LIPW). The total budget allocated to the LIPW is US$48 million (54.17%) of the original IDA credit of US$88.6 million.
A review of Social Protection (SP) landscape in Ghana in 2007 revealed that Ghana at that time did not have in place any SP scheme targeting the poor within the working age population. GSOP is therefore piloting the LIPW, as an SP instrument targeting the rural poor in the working age bracket. The Rationalization of Social Protection Expenditure study mentioned in my earlier monthly letters clearly showed that the LIPW is currently the only well targeted SP program providing some income security for the rural poor in Ghana.
